The Story Behind the Jack-o’-Lantern
When October comes, shops fill with orange pumpkins, fake spiders, and black cats. Everyone knows it’s time for Halloween — a night of costumes, candy, and scary fun. But have you ever wondered why people carve faces into pumpkins and call them jack-o’-lanterns?
The story started long ago in Ireland. There was a man named Stingy Jack — “stingy” means someone who doesn’t like to spend money. Jack was clever but selfish. He loved to play tricks on everyone, even on the Devil himself.
One night, Jack invited the Devil to have a drink. But when it was time to pay, Jack didn’t want to spend his money. He tricked the Devil into turning into a coin to pay for the drink — and then Jack put the coin in his pocket next to a silver cross so the Devil couldn’t escape!
Later, Jack finally let the Devil go, but made him promise not to take his soul when he died. Years later, Jack did die — but he couldn’t go to heaven, because he had lived a bad life, and he couldn’t go to hell, because of his deal with the Devil. So the Devil gave him only one small piece of burning coal to light his way through the dark. Jack put it inside a turnip to make a lantern and has been wandering the Earth ever since. People began to call him Jack of the Lantern, or Jack-o’-lantern.
When Irish people moved to America, they discovered pumpkins — big, round, and perfect for carving. Turnips were too small and hard, but pumpkins were soft and bright. So the tradition changed: people started to carve scary faces into pumpkins to scare away Jack’s ghost and other evil spirits.
Now, carving a jack-o’-lantern is a fun part of Halloween. Some people make funny faces, others make creepy monsters. When the candle lights up the pumpkin at night, it’s not just decoration — it’s a little piece of an old legend still alive today.
